I am summoned downstairs to partake in our daily practice of food consumption. I can smell the food and know exactly what we are eating before we even eat it: Red Beans and Rice. This is Dad’s signature meal that he prepares. And I always enjoy it when he makes it. It isn’t about the seasoning or the texture of the food, although, it is prepared nicely. It is about the history this dish speaks. His mother cooked this same dish and his mother’s mother cooked that dish. This recipe is infused with our family genealogy, as that you can taste the richness of the food when it makes contact with your tongue. This is a concept that it took most of my current life to understand, but it was worth the weight.

Tulips
Tulips are seasonal flowers. They only bloom one time throughout the year.
When it is their time, they bloom so effervescently. They shine and bring a different kind of beauty. They illuminate your yard with their diverse colors. Their presence itself changes the mood of our atmosphere. They bring about feeling of happiness and joy. It is a season everyone eagerly awaits. Tulips are precious because they are a “once in a blue moon” type of flower.
Sometimes I’d like to think of myself as a tulip. Waiting for my season to come. When I arrive, I too shall be as glorious and appreciated as tulips. I too shall bloom to the fullest I can, and make sure the atmosphere around me is enlightened.
I am learning to love tulips…
I am learning to love my self.

Sacramento State
Hey all! I am so excited to be transferring to Sac State in the fall! I have seen so many pictures of the campus and it just looks so lush and beautiful. I am so lucky to be attending in the fall when the trees will start out full and green. As the semester goes on, I know they will begin to turn to their orange and yellow tones. There are so many trees on campus, those beautifully colored leaves are going to cover every trail on campus. Each gust of wind will blow a few more leaves off of their branches and onto the ground. There is a reason Sacramento used to be called the “City of Trees” and the Sacramento State campus exemplifies that perfectly. A.R.
Maid of Honor
Hey all! One of my best friends is getting married and she picked me to be her Maid of Honor. Ahh! I am equally as excited as I am nervous. It will be an outdoor wedding in Rocklin, with burgundy and white bouquets covering every corner. It is during that perfect time of year where we have not yet reached those unbearable cold days but we have passed the miserable days of one hundred degree weather. There are six of us bridesmaids in total who will all be wearing floor-length, burgundy, chiffon dresses. I think the emotions of seeing my best friend marry the love of her life will make all of us girls emotional, our salty tears smearing the mascara off of our eyelashes. I simply cannot wait. A.R.
My “Man Crush Monday”
Hey all! I have a really embarrassing crush on a friend of a friend. Here is my best visual description of him. This boy is lean and six feet tall, made taller only by the dark brown (almost black) curls on top of his head. He is always smiling, probably to show off his perfectly straight teeth. But the best part of his smile is the dimple that forms on his left cheek, piercing a hole into his buttery, caramel colored skin. His five o’clock shadow adds the perfect amount of “scruff” to his perfect boy next door appearance. I better stop there before I embarrass myself even more! A.R.
Movie Theater
Hey all! I recently went to my local movie theater to watch Captain Marvel. I really enjoyed it! I love that Marvel Studios created a film with a woman in power as the central character. As intense as the movie was, I think we can all agree the best part about going to the movie theaters is loading up on snacks. My favorite candy to get is Buncha Crunch – they are the perfect mix of crunchy and melt-in-your-mouth-y. I also always have to get popcorn with extra butter drizzled on top. These sweet and salty flavors make for the perfect mixture while watching a movie and they are what I look forward to the most. A.R.
Stress of Transferring
Hey all! As some of you might remember, I am going to be graduating from Cosumnes River College at the end of this spring semester. There are so many deadlines that I have to stay on top of in addition to the ones in my regular classes. Right around this time of year all of the stress feels really heavy. It feels as though it is weighing down my whole body sometimes. My skin is breaking out and my eye bags are the most prominent thing on my face. I am literally relying on my daily little yellow caffeine pill to make it through each day. All I can do is think about how close we are to the end of the semester to help me finish strong! A.R.
Found Poem
Hey all! I found this poem that a man wrote about the scent of a woman that I wanted to share this week. I love the comparisons he made to beautiful things in nature. I hope you all enjoy it as much as I did! A.R.
A Woman’s Scent – Poem by
Dr Tapan Kumar Pradhan
That night when my mother
took me to her breasts
I knew woman had a scent
quite different from man’s…
Tonight you still remind me of
my mother’s old fragrance
though you too have your different scent –
a scent entirely your own!
In summer an aroma of apple juice
envelopes your breasts. In monsoon
the wet fragrance of wild forest flowers
in your hair. And in the winter
your arms smacking of honeyed milk
and your lovely feet of jasmines. In spring
this strong odour of musk in your loins,
and in your navel that faint lavender!
In different seasons you smell differently
In different places you smell differently.
But when I smell you entirely at once,
my love,
your scent becomes
an undefinable something!
Sun
I am so happy the rain has gone away and the temperature is starting to rise. They say that seasonal depression is real and that people tend to be happier when the sun is out. I can totally relate to this. I have been in such a better mood than I was when it was cold and rainy. It also helps that I get to wear my bright, floral rompers on the weekends now. I have been so eager to pull those out from the dark, dusty corner of my closet. The sun feels so good on my bare arms, legs and face. Nothing beats the feeling of leaving a cold classroom on campus and walking out to feel the sun’s rays covering you entirely, making you feel literally “warm and fuzzy.” I am going to continue enjoying the sun right now during spring until the summer sun starts to burn down on all of us. Rose
A couple of weeks ago I received a single rose from a boy that I have a class with here on campus. It was wrapped neatly with cellophane, crinkled only by the pink ribbon that tied it together. Along with it was a stem of petite baby’s breath, its white flowers making the fiery red petals stand out even more. He gave it to me because he was going on vacation to Italy for two weeks and did not want me to “forget about him.” Unfortunately, this boy is not a very nice boy. He sees other girls without telling me and then tells me that he does not see anyone else. He still does not know that I know. Right now, this single rose is drooping sadly over the vase it is in. The water has turned green and the baby’s breath has shriveled. Its petals are crunchy and have turned into a dark brownish red. This is a pretty accurate representation of what I think about him.
