Cigarettes and Fish

When it comes to grandparents, people have pictures and clothing to remember them by. For me, most of my grandfather’s belongings are scattered and my grandmother’s are owned by my aunt. So what’s left to remember them by?

For me, its cigarettes and fish, their smell at least.

I’m not a smoker, (nor do I plan on being one), nor a cook, (I WISH I was), but I can’t help but think of my grandparents when I smell those distinct aromas.

The heavy smoke from cigarettes reminds me of fragmented memories back at my grandfather’s house. I remember helping him move his belongings, and stumbling through old toys that my grandpa bought for my dad.

At the young age of 9, the idea of genealogy didn’t cross my mind, but seeing these toys and their condition gave me insight to what life for them was like. I could tell that they didn’t have a whole lot when they were growing up, so they had to make the best of what they had. Toys like race cars and Power Rangers were in good enough condition to play with, but were aged due to time.

Some days I wonder how my grandfather could go through supporting a family with only so little, and how appreciative my dad and his siblings were.

Fish’s burning smell is mixed up. As there are multiple ways to prepare fish, the smells represent different memories with her. One contains a distant memory of playing street soccer with my grandma. Another reminds me of how many times she took me to Toys R Us to buy Beyblades. Or picking me up from elementary school, even when I thought I was super cool walking home by myself.

I miss them, and I miss those smells.

Sound, taste, sight, touch and what was it again?

Smell is often the most forgotten sense of mind. Mostly because I think I spend so much of my life with my nose plugged up.

Smell is an odd sense. You may put different things in and around your house to change the smell but after awhile you get too used to it and cannot recognize the smell anymore. Smell is also one of the worst sense when it’s awful. Seeing something awful or hearing something awful is a fixable problem but smelling something awful? That is too hard of a problem to fix.

I do like my nose but if I was going to lose one sense, it’d be smell. That being said I began to appreciate my sense of smell with the improving seasons. Spring is coming and I that smell always reminds me of being younger and playing outdoors. Summer is coming and the smells I associate with that are mostly fruits, freshly cut grass and sweating. – A.C

Late to the Party

Hi! Please excuse my tardiness as I am the very last of the 5 senses group to post my very first blog. Lets call it fashionably late!

I have been going around and around with ideas on what specifically to blog about. Driving through the Pocket- Sacramento area yesterday with Nena (the beautiful black lab pictured below), I watched her sit comfortably in the back seat. I snapped pictures as she lightly placed her chin on the window just enough for her ears to be pushed back by the breeze. She was eager to get out and smell new scents. Eager to find somewhere to play hard and enjoy the sun that has been hiding. Suddenly I had an AH HA! moment. I was born, growing, and still living in Sacramento and yet there are places I have not experienced yet; the CA museum, moon garden, old sugar mill. I have yet to even cycle the river trail! What was I waiting for? This blog is my complete motivation to fulfill these unvisited locations. Those unvisited scents, views, textures, sounds, and tastes. New adventures coming soon!

Sight to See

I love experiencing in things. One winter I traveled with my relatives to Arlington, TX, to watch a football game. My team, Philadelphia Eagles played their team the Dallas Cowboys. The stadium was a sight to see, it was humongous and so new. I’ve never been to a stadium with a dome, so the dome was amazing. When it was closed it kept the cold Texas air out, feeling as if I was snuggled up at home watching the game. We were so close to the field that you can see all the players and so much more. Their clean white uniform prior to the game, the players’s warm-ups, the beautifully designed fields and shining goal posts. Everything was just so amazing to see.

A break in the music

This week I wanted to take a break from the theme of music and writing and focus on another sensation that can improve writing. Although not one of the five main sense, drowsiness is an interesting sensation that feels beneficial to writing. You’ve heard it from classmates or other authors, talking about staying up late and finishing their writing. It seems to be a valuable tool and maybe a sensation that is overlooked.

Too often in our society do we feel the need to always be fresh and aware but being tired is a everyday part of life. I think drowsiness or writing while tired is overlooked. For myself, being tired connects me with a loose and open side. I think it’s something mostly everyone has tried but maybe not something everyone aspires to do. It’s a hard concept to monitor and whose to say if you do write better when tired but if you haven’t tried it out before, give it a try. – A.C

Again

Again, I get up at such an early part of the morning. Actually, I shouldn’t lie to myself. I’ve been up since three o’clock, my sense of hearing is just so good that my brother ruffling in the covers in the room next to mine is enough to wake me up. I wonder what it’s like, to be deaf? I know that they can’t hear, but how do deaf people learn the way “day” and “Dre” have the same “a” sound, but the “a” isn’t present in the second word. I hope I don’t lose my hearing. I love knowing that I can hear the sounds of someone laugh, or the jingling of keys, or someone speaking. Even if everyone in the world has different voices, our ears are a universal communicator and translator. It can interpret the emotions and thoughts behind a sentence. Even a simple “I love you” can be taken differently, based off how one says it and how one hears it.

Blah, here I go again, about a whole bunch of nonsense. Sorry brain, but I need to go back to sleep, again.

Hurricane Beach

I love going to the beach and just relaxing on the sands for hours at a time. This time I went to the beach to find to use my 5 senses to see what can I could experience. As I walked down the pier toward the sands, I decided to take my shoes off to better feel the wood and texture. Although the sun was out, the planks did not burn my feet as the the cold breeze from the city and waves countered against the heat. I sighed as my feet sank into the soft, cool sands. The particles tickled my feet as I stalk across the sands. After setting the plush, fuzzy blanket over the sand, the blanket embraced my body as I laid down. Enjoying the combined sunshine and breeze, I untie my hair. Unfortunately, it was a mistake as my hair whiplashes in the air. Strands of hair slashed across my face, leaving their stinging marks behind. Shocked by attacks, I turned over on my stomach and let the hair in the wind…

Writing and music

Building off my post from last week, I started to think about how related music and writing is. It’s not too common as far as I know to hear about writers listening to music as they write but I do remember one author who mentioned a song he had listened to while writing his book. Douglas Adams talked about Paul Simon’s “One Trick Pony”. I think songs can influence are moods enough that it would be beneficial to writers to try and put themselves in whatever mindset they want to be in through use of music.

This week I’ll do some research for my next post about writers using music as a tool to help write. I’m expecting instrumental music and less Paul Simon.

Hello

Hello,

My name is Katy C Saevang, I’ll go by KC for my future posts. I am majoring in English and History. My ultimate goal is to become a teacher and my dream is to travel the the Mediterranean Islands. I love writing, recently I have not made writing a priority, my goal this semester and this year is to start writing again, let the magic flow through my fingertips per say. I love listening to Wolfgang Mozart while I am writing because it lets the juice out.

Looking forward to learning more!

Hello!

I’m not exactly sure what to post for my first post. Luckily the professor has suggested sharing a song. This is what I listened to on repeat while rushing through my last assignment. It has a good pace but it might of stressed me out a bit. I have a hard time figuring out music and writing, if it’s too good I won’t write so I normally have to put on something without lyrics. Hope you all have a great week! – A.C
